The United States finals of the World Golfers Championship has been moved to The Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Litchfield, AZ and the date moved up a week to Sept. 9-12.

“We had to make the change from the Gold Canyon (AZ) Golf Resort because of the rapid growth and number of entries expected, “ said Anders Bengtson of World Golfers USA.

Qualifiers from club events all over the the U.S. will play on two of the three courses at The Wigwam--The Red, designed by Robert (Red) Lawrence, and The Gold, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr—that are Parkland rather than desert designs.

The Red meanders alongside streams and ponds between pines, cypress and eucalyptus trees, playing 6,852 yards with a course rating of 72.4 and slope of 126 from the blues, 6,291 yards with 69.4 and 118 numbers from the whites and 5,806 yards with 71.6 and 118 numbers from the reds.

The Gold was Jones' West Coast version of the Firestone South Course and can be stretched to 7,430 yards with a course rating of 74.5 and 135. “Don't worry, we aren't playing back there,” Bengtson said. It plays 6,830 yards with 72.3 and 130 numbers from the Championship tees, 6,348 yards with 70.0 and 125 numbers and 5,885 yards with 72.3 and 119 numbers for women.

One winner from each of the five handicap categories—0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25--earn expense-paid trips to Hua-Hin, Thailand for the World Golfers Championship, scheduled Oct. 30-Nov. 6. More than 30 countries will be represented. The United State Golf Association has approved the event and golfers will not lose their amateur status by participating and receiving expenses.

Bengtson indicated that clubs from across the U.S. are encouraged to conduct 18-hole qualifying events to determine a five-player team, one from each of the five handicap categories. The entry fee is $600 per club or $1,000 if a club wanted to send two teams. For more information, go to www.worldgolfersusa.com or call 561 313-9083.

“The true Olympic golf event takes place at the World Golfers Championship,” said Bengtson. “It's where amateurs compete on equal terms just the way Pierre de Coubertin visioned it when he created the Olympics.”

The tournament was started 15 years ago by International Hockey Hall of Fame member Sven Tumba of Sweden, who wanted to give amateur golfers of all ability levels the chances to experience the dreams of a lifetime, representing their respective countries in an international competition.
