Golf Gear: Fila Golf Back on Course PDF Print E-mail

Most of us remember the iconic Fila logo emblazoned on the hats and shirts of PGA Tour superstars like Tom Watson in the 1980s and Lee Janzen in the 90s. Following that, however, there was a period when other brands took center stage. Those days are over, as Fila is making a huge comeback in the golf market thanks in part to a collection that’s crafted for world class athletes yet versatile enough to be worn for almost any activity.

The timing couldn’t be better, as 2011 marks Fila’s 100th anniversary. This coincides with a major resurgence of Tour players choosing the brand’s apparel, most notably Stacy Lewis. The 26-year-old American was decked out entirely in the Fila Golf collection when she captured the year’s first LPGA Tour major at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

“Fila Golf allows me to look and play my best,” says Lewis. “The styles are fashionable and comfortable, plus the performance element is just what I need when I’m on the course.”

The man behind Lewis’ signing is Mitchell Fersten, President of Montreal-based Fersten Worldwide and the North American licensee of Fila Golf. Being one of the leading suppliers of corporate-branded products, Fersten believed Fila Golf would regain its dominant position and that he and his team possessed the infrastructure and knowledge to do so.

“When you grow up watching elite athletes like Bjorn Borg and Tom Watson compete in Fila, the opportunity to acquire the license for the brand is a dream come true,” says Fersten. “Our focus from day one has been to do it right by using only the finest materials and designing products that are consistent with the Fila heritage.”

A key part of that process is Fila Golf principal designer Nancy Robitaille. To outfit an elite athlete like Lewis – and make certain those same clothes appeal to regular men and women – she scours the company archives and combines classic Italian looks with leading-edge technical features.

“I’m always looking for soft, rich fabrics – all the materials we use must pass my touch test,” says Robitaille, who often strolls into stores just to see how clothes feel. “I want Fila Golf to always perform whether on the course, out of a suitcase or in everyday life.”

Robitaille imagines what she and her friends would find attractive, flattering and comfortable. The result is a collection that enhances a golfer’s athleticism regardless of skill level. The looks are also not just reserved for the links. Many are wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying and boast an array of performance features ideal for globetrotters who enjoy many activities and like to travel light.

The Fila Navy and Viva Red colors are synonymous with the brand worldwide, but equally important to Fersten, Robitaille and their colleagues is the color green – especially when it comes to environmentally sensitive production practices. Many pieces in the Fila Golf collection feature 92-percent recycled polyester blends, meaning each garment keeps roughly two plastic soda bottles out of a landfill. Additionally, moisture-wicking and anti-microbial features are inherent to the fabric fibers. This creates a supple feel while eliminating the need for harsh chemical sprays.

“We’re proud to say Fila Golf is WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) certified which is now the world standard in social responsibility,” says Fersten. “This commitment encourages our partners to participate in efforts to reduce negative impacts on our environment.”

Men can choose from an array of performance shorts, pants and polos along with accessories like belts and hats to complete the look. Half and full-zip sweaters, layering pieces, outerwear and hoodies allow for multiple en-route and off-course options. The Brisbane Textured Polo even features a double jacquard sphere pattern that creates a slimming effect most guys will appreciate.

For ladies, the theme is style and versatility with many items featuring flattering cuts and subtle details such as “V” notched waistbands for extended comfort. Embodying this design philosophy is the Volterra Striped Polo, which showcases three-quarter length sleeves and a faux-wrap front, easily crossing over from the 18th green to post-round drinks.

“Obviously the last few years have been very exciting,” says Fersten. “Fila Golf is back and providing the performance and sophistication expected of this iconic brand.”

Whether they’re teeing it up at the local club, or heading out on a world-class vacation in an exotic locale, Fila Golf is primed to help players look and perform their best. The brand can be found at elite green grass locations throughout North America and at www.filagolf.com.
