BADDECK, Canada—That the best golfer from Canada these days is a left-hander comes as no surprise to Canadians. That’s because Mike Weir is among a remarkably high percentage of golfers from north of the border who play as southpaws. Out here in Nova Scotia and the other maritime provinces, it runs to about 40%.

MONTEBELLO, Quebec, Canada—Stand on the first tee at Montebello Golf Club and you get a wee bit of the Scottish Highlands. That’s because two large mounds down the fairway block the view to the green. Stanley Thompson, the patriarch of Canadian golf course architects, left them untouched when he designed the layout three quarters of a century ago.

JASPER PARK, Alberta - Courses like the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Course simply can't be built anymore.
Canada's most prolific Golden Era architect, Stanley Thompson, also known as the "Toronto Terror" for his larger-than-life persona, designed one of his best here. The course is cut out of the Canadian Rockies' largest national park, full of mountain scenery, pine forests and an abundance of elk, bears and coyotes.
