Orlando Offers Things For Dad To Do, Too PDF Print E-mail
By James McAfee

Fathers trying to make the choice between taking the kids somewhere they can enjoy their vacations and getting off to a luxury resort where they can play some golf and enjoy themselves need to look no more.

Omni-Orlando-Resort-ChampionsGateJust book a vacation to Orlando. There's Walt Disney World, Universal Studio and all those other attractions for the families. There's more than 150 golf courses located within a 60-minute drive of downtown Orlando, offering a world-class array of options from top name architects that will make their golfing choices difficult.

However, they can definitely not go wrong by picking the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate, located just six miles southwest of Walt Disney World off I-4.

I've never seen two golf courses sharing the same clubhouse right next to each other designed by the same architect—Australian Greg Norman in this case—that are as different as night and day.

“ChampionsGate offered me a rare opportuity as a course designer,” Norman said. “We were able to create two excellent and very different golf courses on a single site.”

The International, home of the Del Webb Father/Son Challenge each December, is reminiscent of some of the courses in Scotland or Ireland with sharply mounded sand dunes framing fairways and devilish pot bunkers. The wind adds to the challenge as there are few trees. It can be stretched to 7,363 yards with a course rating of 76.8, the highest in Florida, and a slope of 143. If our group of travel writers is any indication, it's not any easier from the blues at 6,792 yards (74.1 and 137), the whites at 6,239 (71.5 and 132) or the golds at 5,618 (68.0 and 132).

The sixth is listed as a par 4 at 408, 437 and 462 yards, but plays more like a par 5 because you can not afford to get to close to the lake bordering the right side. I could not get home with a driver and 3-wood. It's not just the length, however, heavy rough—even close to the greens--penalizes errant shots, too.

The National is more like other courses in Florida. It winds through southern woodlands, pristine wetlands and an old citrus grove, offering more generous landing areas off the tees. It proved more player friendly, especially from the white tees at 5,937 yards (69.1 and 124). Lower handicappers will find it more challenging from the blues at 6,247 yards (71.9 and 133) or the blacks at 7,128 yards (75.2 and 138).

My favorite hole was the par 3 14th, featuring an iron shot over a wetlands. Hit it straight or risk hitting some trees as I did.

Playing with two other travel writers with single digit handicaps, all of us shot in the low 80s, but our net best ball was nine-under par 63. That's just shows how low scores are possible in team competitions when the players “brother-in-law” as we did that day.

The Prolink GPS system on the golf carts, featuring a yardage display on the back roof by your clubs, comes in handy, especially for first timers, in making club selections.

Bunker rakes are included on the back of the golf carts, but as usual, I left mine in one of the bunkers.

For an fun experience with the kids after they have gone to Disney World, there's the par 3 Champions 9 that is lighted for play at night.

Want to improve your game?

Well, the resort is also home to the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, which includes a double-sided range with a separate short game area plus classrooms filled with all the latest swing analysis equipment. While you may not get to see Leadbetter, recognized as one of the world's top teachers, you will get to see a professional trained by him, including his son Andy.

Every aspect of the Omni Orlando exudes elegance with 730 luxurious guest rooms and suites available. There's also 40 villas nearby for those who prefer that type of accommodations. Other amenities include a 10,000 square foot European style spa, a full service health club, five restaurants and a 15-acre playground featuring a formal pool, a family pool and a 850-foot lazy river that allows kids of all ages to float on tubes through tunnels and rapids.
